In 2017, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, published new guidelines for introducing peanut foods to infants. A 2015 landmark study demonstrated that for babies at high risk for peanut allergy, eating peanut foods early and regularly reduced the risk of peanut allergy by more than 80 percent, compared to peanut avoidance.
Since then, professional and 0-government organizations continue to support early introduction, including the most recent 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Recommendations vary slightly depending on a baby’s risk of developing peanut allergy, which can be evaluated by the baby’s pediatrician or by an allergist.
